We are so lucky to have all this wonderful new forest site on our doorstep
The Woodland Trust has purchased 858 acres (347 hectares) of land to create the new Heartwood forest, having raised over £4 million towards this huge green site.
Just behind Harpenden and Wheathampstead and adjoining Nomansland Common at the back of Sandridge just three miles north of St Albans, it’s going to be the largest new continuous native forest in England.
Incredibly, will take just 12 years to turn what is currently bare farmland into a flourishing green woodland, complete with a diverse range towering trees and wildlife.
The site currently contains 44 acres of ancient woodland, which now sadly makes up only two per cent of UK landcover.

Every dog has a pre consultation prior to acceptance on a walk. This is preferably with the owner, who is invited to meet with their dog and some of the walking dogs. This allows for a supervised introduction for the dogs before they meet again, an assessment period, reassures the owner that their dog is in safe competent hands and as a dog and walker bonding session.
All dogs are worked at a pace that suits them on and off the lead and are reinforced positively with favourite treats. No ball games are used as a form of exercise and toys are discouraged. Exercise and mental stimulation are facilitated by the walker with basic obedience practise and the experience of the pack for appropriate socialising.
All dogs are collected and only returned after at least a 1 hour walk. Some walks are longer, especially on a nice day, a good walk can’t be rushed.
Please read our terms and conditions for more information.

Those of you who have watched ‘Cesar Milan’, the dog whisperer, will be familiar with his ‘power of the pack’ methodology. We experienced the power of the pack ourselves in mid 2008 when we rescued our Rottweiler George. Read more
As you will be aware both today’s domestic dogs and wolves are related to each other? From the Wolfhound and Great Dane to the smallest toy breed, all breed of dogs are direct descendants of the wolf and have inherited many of the wolf’s behaviors and characteristics and the ability to travel long distances .
Your dog can benefit greatly from walking by getting an adequate amount exercise and the great side effect of dog walking is that it gives your dog the opportunity to socialise with other dogs and meet people.
Dogs have different energy levels and walking your dog stabilises them both mentally and physically by letting them expend energy in a controlled manner. High energy dogs who do not get enough exercise often demonstrate destructive behavior such as chewing, digging and escaping or undesirable behaviors such as barking due to frustration.
Another fine sunrise on Nomansland common, it’s a great way to start the day if you haven’t got to be on a train to London. No matter what the weather’s like (barring torrential rain that is) it’s always a pleasure during any season to walk up and stand at the top of the hill on Nomansland and look out towards Wheathampstead.
